Ch. 8: Categories of Nonrandomized Research

Ch. 8: Categories of Nonrandomized Research. Role of Nonrandomized Research. Sometimes random assignment is not possible. How does one make causal inferences in these situations? e.g., how does one minimize self-selection problems?. Categories of Quasi-Experimental Research.

  1. Ch. 8: Categories of Nonrandomized Research

  2. Role of Nonrandomized Research • Sometimes random assignment is not possible. • How does one make causal inferences in these situations? • e.g., how does one minimize self-selection problems?

  3. Categories of Quasi-Experimental Research • Studies with nonequivalent groups • Time-series designs • Single-case designs • Correlational designs

  4. Nonequivalent-Groups Designs • Participants are assigned to conditions by means other than randomization. • Design Example:

  5. Design Using a Wait-List Control Group

  6. Inferring Causation Using Mill’s Methods

  7. Time-Series Designs

  8. Characteristics of Single-Case Experimental Designs • Only one (or a few) sampling units are studied. • Repeated measures are taken of the unit. • Random assignment is rarely used.

  9. Example of a Single-Case Experiment Design (A-B-A-B-A)

  10. Correlational Research • Largest general class of quasi-experimental designs. • A catchall category • These designs have characteristics of other categories, but do not fall neatly into any of them.

  11. Does Madness Foster Creativity? The Case of Robert Schumann

  12. Cross-Lagged Panel Design • Test-Retest Correlations (rA1A2 & rB1B2) • Synchronous Correlations (rA1B1 & rA2B2) • Cross-Lagged Correlations (rA1B2 & rB1A2)

  13. Kidder, Kidder, and Snyderman (1976)

  14. Longitudinal Design Using Cohorts

  15. Cross-Sectional Analysis vs. Longitudinal Analysis
