Find budget forms and directions for the agency to whom you plan to submit a proposal. • Budget directions are specific for various agencies such as the National Science Foundation. Budget Basics
Once you know what work you would like to do and where you would like to submit a proposal… • Attend a budget preparation workshop through the ASU Office of Sponsored Research and/or, • Make contact with the staff in the Office of Sponsored Research Office to assist you with planning the budget. • If possible, make contact with (close) colleagues who have had success with a funding agency. Seek guidance as to what that agency sees as reasonable costs. Budget Basics
Avoiding Common Mistakes… • Budgets require careful planning. Be sure to ask for sufficient funds to complete the tasks! • Do you need help with data entry? • Do you need help with data analysis? • Will you need editorial or reviewing assistance? • Do not pad budgets with unneeded items. • Budgets that seem “padded” are generally viewed unfavorably.
