  2. Did you know ? • 85% of pupils who achieve a Level 5 or better at Key Stage 3 English achieve 5 or more A*- C grades at GCSE • Only 25% of pupils who do not achieve a level 5 in English go on to get 5 A* - C grades

Making good progress • SATs have been abolished –so how will my progress be tested? • Teacher assessment will be used – each unit you complete will receive a level • There will be an end of Key Stage 3 English test based on Non-fiction texts and writing to persuade • You should aim to make 2 Levels of progress from Key Stage 2

  5. How can we improve further? • Improve behaviour/ethos in lessons • Improve attitude to homework • Read more

  6. Improving Behaviour If you are disrupting the teacher or other pupils, effective learning cannot take place: we all lose! Teachers get stressed Pupils fall behind We waste time! Staff mainly complain about “chat” in lessons –but in some cases this is persistent and really needs addressing.

  7. Three easy steps What will happen if you disrupt the learning of the class? • You will receive a warning • You will be asked to move seat • You will be told to EXIT the classroom and sent to another class • Exit form

Serious disruption • Swearing in class • Fighting/toy fighting • Being rude or offensive/inappropriate to staff • Damaging the classroom/another pupil’s work (tampering with another pupil’s computer) • Persistent serious uniform infringements • Misuse of mobile phones/mp3 AUTOMATIC EXIT AND DETENTION

  9. HOMEWORK The most improved pupil in English last year went from a Level 2 in Year 6 to a Level 5 in Year 9. He did all his homework – he also did a lot of extra work not set. You must keep up with homework! Set 1 -95% Set 2 -90% Set 3 – 80% Set 4 – 75% Set 5 – 50%

  10. Read, Read, Read. The most important factor in improving your English skills is definitely reading. You are expected to read something everyday – newspapers/novels/short stories/biographies/internet sites/magazines
