  2. Scheme -Epizeuxis – “And the uncles, the aunts, the cousins, the nieces, the nephews, that lived in those walls, the gibbering pack of tree apes that said nothing, nothing, nothing and said it loud, loud, loud.”

  3. Trope -Paradox – “The Mechanical Hound slept but did not sleep, lived but did not live in its gently humming, gently vibrating, softly illuminated kennel back in a dark corner of the firehouse.”

  4. Trope -Irony – “ ‘Is it true that long ago firemen put fires out instead of going to start them?’ ‘No. Houses have always been fireproof, take my word for it.’ ‘Strange. I heard once that a long time ago houses used to burn by accident and they needed firemen to stop the flames.’ ”

  5. Trope -Simile – “He was not happy… He recognized this as the true state of affairs. He wore his happiness like a mask, and the girl had run off across the lawn with the mask and there was no way of going to knock on her door and ask for it back.”

  6. Scheme -Polysyndeton – “Laughter blew across the moon-colored lawn from the house of Clarisse and her father and mother and the uncle who smiled so quietly and so earnestly. Above all, their laughter was relaxed and hearty and not forced in any way…”
