Pierre Lebrun Case Study • Read the case study about Pierre Lebrun, and answer the questions provided below on a separate sheet of paper (keeping in mind the different perspectives of the three social sciences)

The Process of Inquiry • The inquiry process is key among social scientists. It is how we gather, analyze, and interpret varies sets of data and information. • Complete the handout regarding the 5 stages of the inquiry process • Identify a problem or question • Develop a hypothesis • Gather data • Analyze the data • Draw conclusions (you may want to refer back to your PowerPoint slides titled ‘Triology Science’s’ for some suggestions)
Cultural Anthropology • Cultural anthropologists often develop theories to make sense of the evidence they have gathered • Most anthropologists start with an interesting topic, and as they research, their findings are part of a larger picture • Anthropologists do not always agree about the meaning of culture (subjective), but the debate that occurs generates new research and the development of new theories
Cultural Anthropology Theories • Arrange yourselves into 5 groups (most groups will be made of pairs) • While reading through pg.’s 28-31 of the text, your group will choose one of the following theories and become an ‘expert’, then you will present your findings to the class on chart paper • Remember to plan your layout first (using pencil would be a good idea), use colour and the writing needs to be big enough for people to see • Theories: • Cultural Relativism • Functional Theory • Cultural Materialism • Feminist Anthropology • Postmodernism Have at least 3 major points for your topic
