Curriculum During the first year 3 class meeting students were asked to identify issues and concerns that might usefully be addressed during an engineering class.
Students suggestions Commonly raised ideas: • New materials and technologies • Renewable resources – raw materials • Renewable /sustainable energy sources • Recycling • Basic engineering devices • Electronic circuits • Heating and cooling systems
Approach I propose to use a practical approach, using a ‘robot olympics’ competition to introduce engineering components and materials. Students will be asked to collaborate in pairs to prepare entrants for this competition. The rules and boundaries for the competition and the marking scheme for the competition will be designed by students
Follow up • Students will be asked to prepare a brief (16 slides) PowerPoint presentation outlining the design development of their robot, how it works and calculations of energy transfer etc. • Each presentation should examine alternative solutions and indicate why design choices were made.
Example calculation A motor is to be used to operate a lift in a six storey building. The lift has a capacity of 1000kg and needs to raise the lift 30m in 20 sec. What size (power rating) of drive motor will be required? A load of 1000kg experiences a downward force due to gravity of 1000 * 9.81 = 9810 Newtons Work = Force * distance = 9810N * 30m = 294300 J Power is total work done (J) / time taken (sec) Power (Watts) = 294300 / 20 = 14715 Watts = 15kW Or since 1hp = 0.75kW we need a 20hp motor
