  2. Summary • What is PINT? • Why Simple Services make Sense • PINT Status • IETF/ITU Relationship • PINT Implementations & Timelines • SAINT - Putting it all together • Futures

  3. What is PINT? • PSTN/Internet Interworking • Working Group in IETF; Protocol & MIB • Way of driving GSTN Services from IP Net • High level Requests from IP Net, Execution within GSTN, Reponses back • Can re-use existing I.N. systems

  4. To Other Operators To Rest of Own Network To Other Operators To Rest of Own Network Web Server + PINT Client Web Client Web Server + PINT Client Web Client Internet PINT Gateway PINT Gateway Executive System Central Office/ Service Node CO/SN

  5. Why Simple Services make Cents • There are 900 Million steam phones • Existing GSTN Services get new customers • Loose-Coupled : Little change, simple config • Can re-use existing I.N. & Billing Systems • “Internet-enables” your Central Offices • International Callback, Web Directories,...

  6. PINT Status • PINT Protocol • Based on SIP/SDP • Extensions are going to “final call” • PINT MIB • Based on Application MIB • Initial Specification released • Discussion continuing

  7. IETF/ITU PINT Relationship PINT Client • IETF PINT WG deals with IP Protocol for carrying requests & responses; how the requested services are executed is someone else’s problem PINT/SIP Proxy PINT/SIP PINT Gateway MAGIC

  8. ITU/IETF Relationship • ITU SG11 deals with Architecture and Protocols between GSTN Components • Liaison to PINT WG agreed at March ITU SG11 meeting • Agreement that PINT works with Existing I.N. Recommendations • A PINT Gateway is a (very) clever terminal

  9. PINT Implementations & Timelines • PINT Products from Siemens & Lucent • Both companies demonstrated at CeBIT • Siemens’ EWSD supports R2D services - now ; INXpress v.7 VDI development in progress - due Q1’01 • Lucent’s “Telecommand” supports R2D and R2F services - now • Other implementations in progress

  10. SAINT - Putting it all together • PINT - Requests from IP, Action in GSTN, Status to IP • PIN/TNIP - Requests from GSTN, Action in IP Net, Status to GSTN • SAINT - Combination services - PSTN triggers IP Net and this then triggers PSTN (or the other way)

  11. Internet Call Waiting - SAINT Register 200 INVITE 200 ACK INVITE ACK VoIP - RTP 200 CO/SN

  12. A Glass Darkly... • PINT - Extension of Services and Protocol Features, Management • PIN/TNIP - Service Requirements and formally starting WG • ITU - CS4 - Parlay, PINT, and all that • Implementations - Expanded services and creation tools, interoperability tests • The little matter of Security...
