Today’s Learning Goal I will learn strategies for personal goal-setting and self-discovery by reading “Begin with the End in Mind” by Sean Covey and answering reflection prompts.
Habit 2: What does it mean? • Having an “End in Mind” means developing a clear picture of what you want to accomplish in life. Why do we need it? • We need to determine a vision now, before it is too late. It’s not about knowing every little detail, it’s about having direction. • If you don’t have direction, you could end up going the “wrong way” and wasting your time.
Habit 2: “The Crossroads of Life” • “Crossroads of Life” include important life-changing decisions that you should consider before making choices that could impact your development as a person Examples: • Do you want to go to college? For what? • What type of friends do you want to have? • Will you have sex before marriage? • Will you drink or do drugs? • What are you looking for in a career?
Habit 2: Getting Started on Your Mission Statement • Method #1: The Quote Collection (collect one to five of your very favorite quotes) • Method #2: The Brain Dump (speed write for 15 minutes to end up with a rough draft of your mission) • Method #3: The Retreat (Plan a time when you go to a place that inspirational and develop your statement) • Method #4: The Big Lazy (Model after a mission statement you know)
Habit 2: Three Watch-Outs • Negative Labels • “If you’ve been falsely labeled, you can live with it. The real danger comes when you start to believe those labels yourself.” • “It’s All Over” Syndrome • Teens sometimes feel it is, but it is never over. Simply learn from your mistakes. • Wrong Wall • “We are often so busy climbing the ladder of success that we don’t that we never take the time to see if our ladder is leaning against the right wall.”
Habit 2: Key No. 1 • Count the cost • What will you have to sacrifice to accomplish your goals? • How will you benefit?
Habit 2: Key No. 2 • Put in Pen • “A goal not written is only a wish”
Habit 2: Key No. 3 • Just Do It! • There is no “try.” • You either do it or you don’t.
Habit 2: Key No. 4 • Use Momentous Moments • Harness important moments in your life to set goals. • Learn from tough experiences. • “Character is the discipline to follow through with resolutions long after the spirit in which they were made has passed.”
Habit 2: Key No. 5 • Rope Up • Connect yourself to others who either have the same goals/direction as you. • Connect yourself to others who have accomplished the goals that you want to accomplish.
