Habitat • Belugas live in cold oceans in and near the Arctic. • They are found along the northern coasts of Alaska, Canada, Greenland, Europe, and Asia.
Babies • After male and female belugas mate, a baby starts to grow inside the female’s body. • The baby grows for a little over a year before it is ready to be born.
Predators • Native people in the Arctic hunted belugas. • Other predators are killer whales, polar bears and Greenland sharks.
Food • Belugas eat lots of fish such as cod, herring, and smelt. • They eat squid, shrimp, and octopus as well. • They also find foods such as snails, crabs, and sandworms near the ocean bottom.
Appearance • They have small, dark eyes and good eyesight above and below the water. • They are about 3 to 5 m long. • Some weigh over 1,361 kg.
Special • Their round white bodies can bend and turn easily. • Their melon changes shape when it makes sounds.
