Every family has tension • “Mom anxiously took me from Poppy and I clutched hard to her shoulder, my heart beating wildly from an unidentified terror.” (Page 13) • “Well, my brother’s an idiot,” (Sonny) “If you two boys can’t say anything nice at the table” (Elise) (Page 29) • -Parents get mad when Sonny gets back late from sledding (page 207).

  3. Brothers are always in competition with each other to win a fathers love. • “I’m going to murder you, you little four-eyed freak.” (Page 48) • -Sonny and Jim always got into fights about whether football or rockets were more important. (Page 49) • -Sonny and his friends sledded to Big Creek and Jim was mad because they went to school and next time there is a snow storm they are all going to be forced to go to school because they were able to get there. (Page 208)

  4. Dads have tough love towards their kids where as moms want more for their kids • - Elise gets mad at Homer for taking Sonny into the mine. (Page 175) • “You are not going to the mine. No matter what else you do this night, you mustn’t do that.” Sonny’s mom does not want him to go to the mine because she wants something better for him and she knows that he can achieve it. (Page 242) • - Sonny’s dad always went to watch Jim’s football games but he only went to watch Sonny fly his rockets once.

  5. -Every family has tension.-Brothers are always in competition with each other.-Dads have tough love towards their kids where as moms want more for their kids.
