Qualities of an Epic Hero • On a quest to accomplish something • Possesses superhuman or superior strength • Makes ethical decisions (for example: the hero would not kill innocent civilians in pursuit of his/her quest) • Risks death for the greater good of society • Responsible leader • Embodies the values of a particular society

The Heroic Code • Warrior class was ruled by a tribal chieftain • A body of thanes was bound to a chieftain by kinship • A custom of giving • A personal honor code including the concept of blood vengeance • A warrior must defend his lord to the death
Concept definitions: • Wyrd – fate or personal destiny • Wergild – literarily means ‘man price’. If you killed a man in a clan you would have to pay monetary reparation. Otherwise , a member of that clan had the right to kill you or a member of your family.
