What are all the stress components in this chimney? For masonry, what stress is important?
Already talked about multiple stresses at a point: • Beams – get both shear stress and normal stress • Pressure vessels – get two normal stresses • Now look at stresses at a point due to combined loading. Procedure: • Must decide where the critical point is (i.e. where does maximum stress occur?) • Cut the member at that point and solve for internal forces • Determine stresses from these internal forces • Add “like stresses, i.e.: • stotal = s1 + s2 + s3 + ….……….. • ttotal = t1 + t2 + t3 + …………… • Summarize these stresses on a stress element – called alligned stress element or initial stress element.
