ADVERBS. An adverb tells us more about a verb. e.g 1. The sun shone. 2. The sun shone brightly. The word ‘brightly’ makes the meaning clear ‘how the sun shone?’. Adverbs answer the question, ‘how, when and where.’ eg. 1. The boat moved slowly .(How ?)

Adverbs answer the question, ‘how, when and where.’ • eg. 1. The boat moved slowly.(How ?) • 2. The boat arrived today. ( When?) • 3. The boat remained there. ( Where?)
Adverbs often end in -ly • Example : slowly, quickly, cautiously,hurriedly etc
Adverbs do not have a fixed position. • They can be placed: • 1.After a verb-The turtle crawled slowly along. • 2. Before a verb- The turtle slowly crawled along. • 3. At the beginning of a sentence- Slowly the turtle crawled along. • 4. At the end of a sentence- The turtle crawled along slowly.
The word ‘not’ is always an adverb. • It gives the verb the opposite meaning. e.g • Vikram has left for Mumbai. • Vikram has not left for Mumbai.
Position of Adverbs • We do not usually put adverbs between a verb and its object. They are put either before the verb or after the object. • e.g.1. I get headaches. • I often get headaches. • ( Not – I get often headaches) • 2. She speaks English. • She speaks English well. • ( Not –She speaks well English.)
Adverbs of Time. • Adverbs of time describe when a particular action took place. • e.g. Geeta took leave yesterday. • Call the doctor now. • Srinivas came to work very late
Adverbs of Place • Adverbs of place describe where a particular action took place. • e.g. • Children are not allowed here. • Please ask them to wait outside. • Please sit down.
Adverbs of Manner • Adverbs of manner tell us how a particular action was done. • e.g. • All the students were sitting quietly. • She sings beautifully. • He performed very well. • Govind reads clearly. • This story is well written.
Adverbs of Frequency • Adverbs of frequency explain how often the action spoken about was performed. • I have told you twice. • He often makes mistakes. • She always tries to do her best.
