1. Book Love Before you start reading, please mark the page you’re starting on!

2. Math in English Class • Take the number of pages you read in 10 minutes and multiply it by 12 • This is how many pages you can comfortably read in 2 hours • Take the number of pages you can read in 2 hours and multiply it by 11 • This is the number of pages you could read in the 2nd marking period if you read 2 hours every week • Take the number of pages you could read in the 2nd marking period and divide it by 200 (an average book length) This is the number of books you could read in the 2nd marking period if you read 2 hours every week

3. Check out my example: • Pages per hour: 10 • 10x12=120 pages • 120x11=1,320 pages • 1,320/200= 6.6 books

5. Figurative Language Review

6. Allusion a brief and indirect reference to a person, place, thing or idea of historical, cultural, literary or political significance. It does not describe in detail the person or thing to which it refers.

7. Alliteration the occurrence of the same letter or sound at the beginning of adjacent or closely connected words.

8. Imagery language that appeals to the senses (sight, sound, smell, taste, touch)

9. Metaphor a comparison between two things without using like or as

10. Simile a comparison between two things that uses like or as

11. Personification when an author gives a nonhuman thing human traits

12. Hyperbole An extreme exaggeration in order to make a point

13. Denotation The dictionary definition of a word

14. Connotation an idea or feeling that a word inspires in addition to its literal or primary meaning.

15. Symbolism the use of symbols to signify ideas and qualities by giving them symbolic meanings that are different from their literal sense.

16. Theme The main message an author hopes to convey
