  1. Vertical Thanksliving Pastor Jon Fulton November 18, 2018 Series: Thanksliving

  2. 28 One of the teachers of religious law [Old Testament Law] was standing there listening to the debate. He realized that Jesus had answered well, so he asked, “Of all the commandments, which is the most important?” 29 Jesus replied, “The most important commandment is this: ‘Listen, O Israel! The Lord our God is the one and only Lord. 30 And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength.’ 31The second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ No other commandment is greater than these.” --Mark 12:28-31 (NLT)

  3. 1 And God spoke all these words: 2 “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. --Exodus 20:1-2 (NIV)

  4. 1. “Thanksliving” is about honoring God’s position

  5. 4 “You must not make for yourself an idol of any kind or an image of anything in the heavens or on the earth or in the sea. 5You must not bow down to them or worship them, for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God who will not tolerate your affection for any other gods. I lay the sins of the parents upon their children; the entire family is affected—even children in the third and fourth generations of those who reject me. 6But I lavish unfailing love for a thousand generations on those who love me and obey my commands. --Exodus 20:4-6 (NLT)

  6. 2.“Thanksliving” is about honoring God’s jealousy

  7. An idol is ANYTHING you are putting before God

  8. An idol is ANYTHING you are putting before God In America, the most common idols are work, success, image, family and possessions

  9. You must not misuse the name of the LORD your God. The LORD will not let you go unpunished if you misuse his name. --Exodus 20:7 (NLT)

  10. 3.“Thanksliving” is about honoring God’s name

  11. 8 Remember to observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. 9You have six days each week for your ordinary work, 10but the seventh day is a Sabbath day of rest dedicated to the LORD your God. On that day no one in your household may do any work. This includes you, your sons and daughters, your male and female servants, your livestock, and any foreigners living among you. 11 For in six days the LORD made the heavens, the earth, the sea, and everything in them; but on the seventh day he rested. That is why the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and set it apart as holy. --Exodus 20:8-11 (NLT)

  12. 4.“Thanksliving” is about honoring God’s day

  13. Through its sacredness, the Sabbath becomes the centerpiece of a naturally sound life, a weekly reminder of how to live in a way that honors the Creator, the creation, and the created.

  14. The Old Testament’s use of the word ‘Sabbath’ (shabbâth 7676) means “to repose (i.e. cease from exertion)”

  15. In the New Testament, the word Sabbath (sabbatŏn 4521) is the Hebrew equivalent (matching Strong’s 7676) and the definition is very similar except a short supplemental clause is added. The clause reads “or a day of weekly repose from secular avocations.”
