  1. UPA- Compare/Contrast Essay QUALTIES OF A GOOD FRIEND

  2. Example: The first trait of a good friend that is shown in both Speak and I know Why the Caged Bird Sings is support. In Speak, Mr. Freeman works with Melinda on her tree project and doesn’t fail her because of her mistakes. (This shows that) Mr. Freeman is willing to assist Melinda in improving artistically and to help her develop as a person.

  3. Example: Both in the novel “Speak” and “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings,” characters advise other characters. In “Speak,” David says to Melinda, “Don’t get me wrong. I think what you did was kind of cool…but don’t expect to make a difference unless you speak up for yourself.” (This shows that) David is trying to give Melinda valuable advice. He is attempting to help her to understand that she needs to take charge of her own life. More specifically, he is telling her to speak up for what she believes in.

  4. Example: In “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings,” Mrs. Flowers advises Marguerite on the importance of having a voice. She says, “Now no one is going to make you talk…words mean more than what is down on paper. It takes the human voice to influence them with the shades of deeper meaning.” (This shows that) Mrs. Flowers is willing to point out that Marguerite is not standing up for herself in order to make Marguerite a better person. Friends who are able to help you through your problems without making them harder are friends worth keeping.

  5. Example: • In “Speak,” Ivy gives Melinda advice. She tells Melinda how to make imperfect leaves on a tree. “You have to make them all different shapes and sizes.” (This shows that) Even though Melinda is not perfect, Ivy still sees her as a friend and wants to help her do better.

  6. Things to watch for- • Transitions • 1:2 Ratio • A strong topic sentence • Make sure you have Concrete Details meaning you are telling exactly what happened without your opinion. • Three quotes • (This shows that) Take out of paragraph • Save the opinion for your commentary! • Fragment Sentences!
