Waste Disposal In earlier ages, nature had the ability to recycle Earth’s waste at a self-sustaining pace. There was NO need for composting Causes for our current Waste Disposal Industrialization Population concentration Paper and packaging materials
Waste Disposal: Statistics Kentuckians produce approximately 4.67 pounds of waste per capita per day. Each county has developed a solid waste management plan to reduce solid waste landfills by 25% annually.
Reasons to Compost Composting is defined as the biological decomposition of organic solid waste under controlled aerobic conditions. As much as 70% of the annual waste stream produced in the nation may be compostable.
Reasons to Compost The product of composting may be used as: Mulch Solid Amendment A minor source of nutrient addition
Reasons to Compost: Mulch The use of compost as mulch around shrubs, trees or garden plants is the largest single use of compost. Mulching reduces runoff through higher percolation and water retention capacities and by doing so, reduces erosion, the number one water pollutant in the nation.
Reasons to Compost: Mulch Mulch reduces the amount of water evaporation by restricting the amount of sunlight reaching the soil. Resulting in: A cooler soil surface Lesser requirement for watering Plant death prevention Reduction in weed growth
Reasons to Compost: Soil Amendment Mixing compost into the soil increases pore space allowing: Increased water permeability and aeration Enhancement of soil fertility Slow release of nutrients Suppression of common plant diseases
Reasons to Compost Composting offers the obvious benefits of resource efficiency and creating a useful product from organic waste that would otherwise have been landfilled.
