  3. What is happening to our orangutans? Palm oil is an oil which comes from the tree that orangutans live in. Using and buying things with palm oil means that more trees are being cut down. Companies are using palm oil instead of vegetable oil because it is cheaper. Some orangutans are being sold as pets and then are badly treated. If we do not act now, orangutan’s will be extinct in 2015.

  4. What we can do Please look for palm oil on the packet of food before you buy it. Do not encourage companies to use palm oil! Or you can donate money to an orangutan foundation ... And make a difference today!

  5. Threats to orangutans • The threats to the survival of the orangutan are numerous and difficult to remedy. They include: • Loss of habitat • Illegal hunting • Illegal pet trade • Palm oil Orangutans — native only to the islands of Borneo and Sumatra — are losing habitat at an alarming rate due to logging and the expansion of huge palm-oil plantations in their native rainforests. Increasingly, when it is time for an orphaned or rescued orangutan to return to the wild, there is no “wild” it can be returned to.
