  1. Sensational Subitizing Jeremy Centeno January 2014

  2. Subitizing is the ability to quickly identify the number of items in a small set without counting. • Researchers have demonstrated a strong relationship between subitizing skill and math achievement including a recent study with over 500 kindergarten students. What is Subitizing?

  3. Being able to recognize a number without using any other mathematical process • SubitizingExercise • Perceptual Subitizing can only occur with the numbers 1-4 and sometimes 5 • After five students move on to Conceptual Subitizing Perceptual Subitizing

  4. Being able to recognize a number instantly through the use of number patterns. Understanding that numbers are made of composite parts Conceptual Subitizing

  5. The spatial arrangement of sets influences how difficult they are to subitize. • Children usually find rectangular arrangements easiest, followed by linear, circular, and scrambled arrangements (Beck-with and Restle 1966; Wang, Resnick, and Boozer 1971). • This progression holds true for students from the primary grades to college. Helpful Hints

  6. Person 1 will be the score keeper • Person 2 will flip cards • When signal word is given flip card • If a person says it give them card • If it is incorrect leave card there • When the timer beeps flip next card • Continue until all cards in the flip pile are gone Quick Image War

  15. Think of a catchy phrase the students can repeat when they read your book • Create a Title • Use your subitizingtemplate as a guide • Create 4 pages four your book • You can differentiate the pages according to subitizing research or make them all one style • Be ready to share your story with the group when done • Be creative Making a Children’s Book

  16. When signal is given person 2 in each group will stand up • Each group will beckon for a new person number 2 to come to their group • Person 2 shares their story for 30 seconds • When signal is given person 4 in each group will stand up • Each group will beckon for a new person number 4 to come to their group • Person 4 shares their story for 30 seconds • Person 1 shares for 30 seconds • Person 3 shares for 30 seconds One StrayTimed Round Table
