CALIFORNIA STATE POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY, POMONAACADEMIC SENATE ACADEMIC PROGRAMS COMMITTEE REPORT TO THE ACADEMIC SENATE AP-001-910 Renaming of the History ‘Track I’ to ‘History Major’ and ‘Track II’ to ‘History – Pre-Credential Option’
Academic Programs Committee Date: 9/29/09 • Executive Committee Received and Forwarded Date: 11/18/09 • Academic Senate Date: 12/02/09 • First Reading • 1/20/10 • Second Reading
BACKGROUND: • The Department of History has submitted a proposal to rename what is currently designated as ‘Track I’ as the ‘History Major’ and ‘Track II’ as ‘History Pre-Credential Option’. It is the Department’s intent to modify the existing program to bring it more clearly in line with departmental goals. • RESOURCES CONSULTED: • Judy Anderson, Dan Lewis, Jarred Stallones, Claudia Pinter-Lucke. • DISCUSSION: • This referral was submitted last year but the Committee sent it back to the department to remove extra pagination that did not reflect the intent of the Department. • Currently, the Department has a Track 1 emphasis which is a general History major and Track two emphasis that serves students in the pre-credential program. • This referral is intended to be a name change of the two emphases offered by the Department and has no budgetary implications. • This change has the benefit that It will allow the Department and Peoplesoft to track student progress towards the degree in a more clear and effective manner. • Proper consultation was made and the faculty in the Department are supportive of the change.
RECOMMENDATION: The Academic Programs Committee recommends approval of the referral AP-001-910. We recommend that the History major structure be changed from a major with two emphases to a general major (History) and one option (History Pre-Credential). We further recommend that the History Track I emphasis serve as the curriculum for the general major (History) and that the History Track II emphasis be elevated to an option with the name "History Pre-Credential".
