  1. Cold Spray Equipment Work Group Wally Birtch (CenterLine) Christian Widener (SDSMT) Phil Leyman (VRC Metal Systems)

  2. Cold Spray Equipment Work Group • Objective:This group will discuss cold spray system performance criteria and the different cold spray systems in use and their respective capabilities. The group will also identify the information sources available to provide an educational awareness on each of these systems. • Discussion & Formation of future WIPT: 90 minutes • Outline key tenets of WIPT charter • Outbrief: 15 minutes

  3. Cold Spray Equipment Work Group • Discussion Points: • Cold Spray Systems in Use: • List of Suppliers: • List of Equipment offerings: • System Capabilities: • Information Sources: • Cold Spray Performance Criteria: • Outline key tenets of Working Integrated Product Team (WIPT) charter

  4. Suppliers • Oerlikon Metco – Jochen Tewes • Impact Innovations – Helmet Hӧll; Peter Richter Jr. • Plasma Giken Co., Ltd – Dr. Fukanuma • VRC Metal Systems – Rob Hrabe • CenterLine Limited – Wally Birtch • Innovative Technology Inc – Howard Gabel • Dycomet – Klaas Rozema • ASB Industries, Inc. – Charles Kay

  5. Capabilities • Internal bores down to 1.5 “ (3.5” available now) • Depth to 36” • 6” diameter • 20 ft length (blind or open) • Rotating internal nozzle • Capability equal to current flame spray • Continuous powder feed • Wear/clog resistant nozzle • Fast powder switching

  6. Capabilities (Cont’d) • Compact, back-pack type unit (<70 lbs) • Up to 100 Ft extension (Currently low pressure, desired for high pressure) • 100 % deposition efficiency • Recipes available for the equipment • More available nozzle options • Carbon steel options • Nozzles with more uniform velocities • Systems that monitor particle velocities (integrated) • Line widths down to 5/1000th inch (currently 120)

  7. Performance Criteria • Cost per Kg of material according to the given specification • Dependent on substrate
