  1. ABU Presented Session at Asia Media Summit 2011 24-25 May, 2011, Hanoi Session 3: 2:30-4:00pm, 24 May 2011 NHK STRL Enhanced DTV Systems: Main features in Advanced ISDB-T 24 May, 2011 Kazuyoshi SHOGEN, Kenichi Murayama and Yoshikazu Narikiyo NHK Science and Technology Research Laboratories

  2. Contents 1. About NHK and NHK STRL 2. Concept of DTTB – Current (ISDB-T) and future (Advanced ISDB-T = ISDB-Tn) 3. Future of fixed reception – Large capacity - SHV 4. Future of mobile reception – Stable reception of HDTV 5. Technologies ISDB-Tn Next generation Number of generations

  3. NHK and NHK STRL • NHK (Nippon HosoKyokai, Japan Broadcasting Corporation) • Sole public broadcaster in Japan • Started Radio Service in 1925 • 2 Terrestrial TV services, 2 Satellite TV services, 3 Radio Services, Int. TV and R,and Video on Demand service • NHK Science and Technology Research Laboratories • Established in 1930 • Developed HDTV, UHDTV, satellite broadcasting system, digital broadcasting system, ultra high sensitivity camera, flexible display etc. • Employees : 247 (incld 222 researchers, Dr. 85) NHK STRL

  4. History of Broadcasting Innovation in Japan 4

  5. Current DTTB system in Japan ISDB-T is • the DTTB system developed in Japan. • the robustsystem. • OFDM • Frequency and Time-interleaving, etc • the flexible system. • Hierarchical transmission by segmented OFDM • HDTV / multi-SDTV service for fixed and mobile • One-Seg service for handheld

  6. Features of ISDB-T system

  7. The East Japan Great Earthquake (2011 off the Pacific coast of Tohoku Earthquake)

  8. Video of NHK GTV at 14:46 on 11 March 2011 The budget debate in the Japanese diet followed by EEW (Earthquake Early Warning) and EWBS (Emergency Warning Broadcasting System, Tsunami Warning). (2 min. 22 sec.) 8

  9. MB86A35 Tuner Module for ISDB-T (6,7,8MHz) w/EEW, EWBS EEW : Earthquake Early Warning EWBS : Emergency Warning Broadcasting System

  10. Targets of ISDB-Tn

  11. Outline of UHDTV (Ultra High Definition TV) (SHV : Super Hi-Vision) 11

  12. Image of Broadcasting Services by ISDB-Tn Service image of ISDB-Tn Mobile/ISDB-Tn Fixed (2020~2025)

  13. Research toward ISDB-Tn

  14. Video of 2010 Open House of NHK STRL (4 min. 13 sec.)

  15. Example of Transmission Parameters (Demonstration in 2010 Open House of NHK STRL) SP: Scattered Pilot CP: Continual Pilot AC: Auxiliary Channel TMCC: Transmission and Multiplexing Configuration Control

  16. Handheld/mobile reception

  17. Technologies for handheld/mobile reception SFBC(Space Frequency Block Code) • Replace and encode two modulation data in the frequency division. • Tx#1 antenna sends the modulation data as it is. • Tx#2 antenna sends the encoded data. h1 h2 • Channel estimation • Need to estimate the channel response before SFBC decoding. • The h1 and the h2 are not the same. So, two channel responses must be calculated. • Estimate the channel response from the scattered pilot (SP: reference signal) .

  18. Video of 2010 Open House of NHK STRL Robust Transmission Technology of Mobile Reception for Next Generation Digital Terrestrial Broadcasting (2 min. 4 sec.) 18

  19. Conclusion • Current DTTB (ISDB-T) • Fixed reception of HDTV • Mobile reception of One-Seg. (Important role in emergency) • Concept of future DTTB (Advanced ISDB-T = ISDB-Tn) • Future of fixed reception – Large capacity – SHV (Super Hi-Vision) • Expanding transmission capacity for next-generation digital terrestrial broadcasting • Future of mobile reception – Stable reception of HDTV 19
