  1. Lab Safety For MSE grad staff September 30, 2002 The PPT file is located by going tohttp://www.chem.purdue.edu/chemsafety/talks.htm

  2. Intro Personal Protection Gloves Other Safety Equipment Hazard Assessment Gas Cylinder Safety Contents

  3. Introduction • This is follow-up to online reading CHP and PPE “training” assignments. • Fifty min is < half the usual duration. • Safety training never, ever ends.

  4. Personal Protection • Personal = on your body. • Required or optional? • How do you know when? • How do you know what? • How do you know anything about the available PPE? • (What does PPE mean?)

  5. Glove Guides, e.g. • Disposable gloves are almost never tested. (Best Co. did, but…..) • Disposable gloves don’t survive ASTM standard tests. • Many gloves are tested by ASTM methods. • They’re not disposables. • Aw, who needs meaningful quantitative information, anyway?

  6. Other Safety Equipment • How to use it? • How to tell if it’s working? • Who to tell if it’s not? • How often it must be tested?

  7. Hazard Assessment • Answers the question of WHEN AN EMPLOYEE MUST WEAR WHICH PPE • and in some cases the hazard assessment also prescribes other safety equipment.

  8. Hazard Assessment • The process of assessing hazards and prescribing the required PPE • Responsibility of the supervisor • Must post written, dated “Certification of Hazard Assessment” in each work area. • THEN IT IS THE RULES. For all PPE and possibly for other precautions

  9. Gas Cylinder Safety(high P, approx 2500 psi, not cryogens) • Secure tank above center of gravity…. • Cap while in transit and not in use. • Uncapped cylinder to be supported individually. • Move only with proper cylinder cart.

  10. Gas delivery from cylinders • ALWAYS use a regulator. • And use the right regulator. • Know how to make gas tight high pressure fittings, or know where to find out how. Gas tight lines demo. Gas cylinder safety hand-out.

  11. Send Me Questions • They pay me to answer your questions • And help find new and safer ways to do things. • swihart@purdue.edu • 47063 • Thank you.
