Vikings • Some of the earliest sagas were told by Vikings. • Vikings lived in modern day Norway, Sweden, and Denmark. • A specific story was Greenlander’s Saga.
The Greenlander’s Saga • About A.D. 1000, a Viking named Leif Eriksson hired a crew and set sail from Greenland heading west. • Looking for a land that “not mountainous, well-timbered, and with small knolls”. • Knoll- is a small round hill
The First Europeans To Arrive In North America Were The. • Spanish • French • English • Vikings
Where Did They End Up? • Leif and his crew ended up in what is today Canada. • The sailors went ashore and built houses of mud and grass. • They called this new land Vinland.
Cause • Leif’s brother Thorvald led a trip to Vinland and came upon what he thought to be three knolls. • It was really nine native people sleeping. • Thorvald attacked the people killing all but one of them.
Effect • The peoples returned later in many boats and attacked the Vikings. • Thorvald was wounded and later died.
What Is An Encounter? • This meeting with the native people was called an encounter. • This encounter with the native peoples ended their trips to Vinland (a.k.a. Canada)
A Long Time • 500 years passed before Europeans returned to the Americas. • During this time Europeans believed that it was dangerous to travel.

Cartographers • A group of people in Germany paid Martin Behaim (today 75$) to make a new kind of map. • The map was in the shape of a ball. This is the first globe ever made. • Behaim called it his “Earth apple”. • Cartographers- Mapmakers
Problems With The Earth Apple • Behaim made the earth much smaller than it really was. • It made a trip from Europe to Asia appear to be 3,000 miles. (it takes 10,000 miles) • Behaim didn’t know about North and South America.
Another Problem • Behaim didn’t know about Australia or Antarctica either.
