  6. You hear a conversation between your teen and his friends about “4/20”. What could they be talking about? A: Hitler’s birthday B: A “pot” smoker’s holiday C: Time of day to use marijuana D: Both B and C

  7. D: Both B and C The date, April 20th is celebrated by marijuana smokers as well as the time of day (4:20) to use marijuana.

  8. Synthetics Synthetic Marijuana K2, Spice Synthetic Cathinones Bath Salts

What is being done about synthetic substances? • The DEA took emergency action to make synthetics illegal and scheduled 1 substances. • US Senate permanently banned K2 and Bath Salts in June 2012. Federal Law signed by Obama on 7/9/12. (31 substances added to the list). • Challenges for regulators to stay ahead of the new formulas of these drugs that may not be covered by current law.

  12. Prescription Medications • Vicodin (hydrocodone) is the #1 prescribed medication in the United States. • National Data states that 1 in 5 teens have abused a prescription pain medication. • 60% of teens who abused opiates did so before age 15. • 1 in 10 teens have abused Adderall or Ritalin.

  13. Over the Counter Medications

  14. OTC Use Dextromethorphan (DXM or DM) is a cough suppressant. It is one of the active ingredients in many OTC cough and cold meds. • Mucinex DM • Robotussin • Nyquil • Dimetapp • Coricidin • Delsym

  15. OTC Use • Drugstores have moved products containing pseudoephedrine into locations where customers must ask a pharmacist for them in an effort to reduce abuse.

What Parents Can Do • Create a safe, supportive environment to discuss the risks of alcohol and drug use. • Use everyday “teachable moments” as conversation starters. • Connect with teens to find out what they know about drugs and alcohol and how they feel about the pressures they face. • Communicate expectations clearly and what the consequences of use will be.

  23. Get to know your teen’s friends. Monitor your teen’s whereabouts and online activity. Encourage community involvement and productive activities. Have family meals. Educate yourself on current trends of substance use. Ask for help and support.
