What happened and when • December 22, 2008 • Hundreds of millions of gallons of coal fly ash slurry escaped after an earthen dike broke at a waste retention pond. The coal sludge ended up covering almost 400 acres. It destroyed homes and some of the slurry got mixed in with some nearby streams.
Important containments/people involved • Some containments in the coal sludge include mercury and after the spill, the level of arsenic in the drinking water noticeably increased. Leslie Sims, an on-sight coordinator for the Environmental Protective Agency deemed some of the well water undrinkable
Consequences of event • Some water was un drinkable, houses were inhabitable, damaged or destroyed. Residents were displaced and the surrounding land was covered in coal sludge
