  1. El Instituto Nacional de Geofísica y Vulcanología tiene origen en el antiguo Instituto Nacional de Geofísica fundado en 1936 por Guglielmo Marconi, que en la época era el Presidente del Consejo Nacional de las Investigaciones (CNR por su sigla en italiano).

  2. El 10 enero de 2001, de acuerdo a los requerimientos previstos en el DL 381/99, mediante la aprobación de los Regalamientos publicados en la GU n. 4 del 5 de enero de 2001y tras instalarse el Consejo Directivo, formalmente entró en funciones el Instituto Nacional de Geofísica y Vulcanología (INGV por su sigla en italiano). Mediante Decreto del Ministro de la Enseñanza de la Universidad y de la Investigación del 20/03/2012 es nombrado Presidente el Profesor Stefano Gresta
