  1. Inquiry Ch. One What Do You Know For Sure? The Iceman…

  2. Learning Targets Understand the differences between observation & inference. Improve your personal ability to observe and remember information.

  3. Textbook, pages 10 - 12 • 1) Read introduction paragraph. • 2) Follow Process and Procedure #1 (Read “Iceman”). • 3) On your own (not in a ‘team’), read through the list of artifacts and comments. Be ready to discuss them in a few minutes!

  4. Activity • 1) Get out a piece of paper & a pen/pencil, please! • 2) We are going to have a timed “exercise”… but first, draw a “T-chart” on your paper. Use the whole sheet. • 3) You have three minutes to: a) On the left, write down the 12 artifacts found with the iceman. b) On the right, write down the 8 comments about the artifacts. The first person done, and complete, will win a prize!

  5. Textbook, page 13 • 1) Process and Procedure #4 (create a ‘team’ of 2-3 people). You may write the information on the same paper which you used earlier in class today (it doesn’t have to be in a notebook).

  6. HOMEWORK ! Tonight, you have a homework assignment! Please answer the questions on the paper I will hand out to you. Be complete and detailed. Tomorrow, you will turn it in, and we will also have a conversation about your answers! The questions are from page 16, Reflect and Connect #1-2 • If you could have 3 more pieces of evidence about the Iceman, what would you want them to be? What information would they give you that would help you explain or describe how the Iceman lived and died? • If you could recruit 3 other scientists to help you solve the mystery of the Iceman, what would you like the specialties of those 3 scientists to be? How would their knowledge help you in your work?

  7. Activity • Some people have an amazing ability to remember information. This video is a bit long (20 minutes), but it’s pretty cool: • http://www.ted.com/talks/joshua_foer_feats_of_memory_anyone_can_do.html

  8. Day TWO Homework Review If you could have 3 more pieces of evidence about the Iceman, what would you want them to be? What information would they give you that would help you explain or describe how the Iceman lived and died? What pieces of evidence did you choose? What information did it give? How did it help you infer more information about the Iceman? If you could recruit 3 other scientists to help you solve the mystery of the Iceman, what would you like the specialties of those 3 scientists to be? How would their knowledge help you in your work? What type of scientist did you choose? How might they help you in your investigation?
