  2. Background Information Thabana has been used in the past as a radioactive waste disposal/storage facility. Various waste types generated as part of the South African nuclear program (NFC) have been disposed at Thabana. Necsa are in the process of developing waste management plans for the historical and future radioactive solid waste. Thabana must be included in the strategy for the development of a waste management plan for historical waste as appropriate

Introduction • The Thabana. • There are various long-term management • options for Thabana: • The options that exist for Thabana are: • Remediation of Thabana to clearance levels. • Licensing of Thabana as a closed disposal site. • Licensing Thabana as a long-term storage area. • Partial removal of some of the inventory and the remainder licensed as a closed disposal site. .

  6. Introduction Currently waste is present in Trenches, bunkers and pipes. There are 9 Trenches that contains different classes of waste, CaF2 bunkers and pipes that contains sources and other radio active waste.

Things to do/consider • Clear understanding and definition of the Scope of work. • Characterization of waste and site. • Feasibility study. • Excavation options (Pros & Cons.). • Regulatory involvement and viewpoint. • Communication to the public/stakeholders. • Resources. • Waste management programme (BPEO). • International involvement shared experience.

  9. My responsibilities • Manage decommissioning projects – compilation of decommissioning strategies and plans. • Manage remediation projects. • Involve in future NFC development with regard to decommissioning and environmental control. • Review and approval of safety assessments.

  11. Personal need In a Case by Case, what common factors apply to assist in SCENARIO DEVELOPMENT to demonstrate safety now and in future. Justification of clean enough.
