Why should we know this? It is important to understand what satire is so that when you read it or when you hear it you can understand the joke and not look like a fool. It is one way authors make their books more interesting.
What satire is NOT direct considerate cooperative Always funny
The Outsiders One example of satire is when they reference the interaction between the blacks and whites in Gone with the Wind and the socs and the greasers in The Outsiders. This is satire because both books are pointing out the stupidity of the gap in the two social classes and why it is inconsequential to the rest of life.
The Giver An example of satire in The Giver is how the government is trying to create a perfect community by getting rid of all of the pain and feelings, which is what makes you be able to enjoy happiness and the joy of life. This is also what people in our society try to avoid. This is satire because the book is exposing the folly of our actions and what we have done wrong. An example of this is how Jona’s dad does not know that what he is doing to the babies is wrong and because this is the only thing he knows, he believes it is the right thing to do. Most people who know saddness and grief would feel the pain that he was causing and be able to stop it, but instead they can do nothing.
Fahrenheit 451 In Fahrenheit 451 the society is shielded from books and knowledge. Ray Bradbury is referencing what he thinks will happen to the world and how corrupt he believes the government has become. This is very close to how our society is now and it is even more embarrassing that somebody fifty years ago has predicted the misfortune of our government today. Another example is when Mildred is watching the “parlor walls” and Jesus is selling products. They are using Jesus as an advertiser where he is really a holly man.
Fahrenheit continued Also on page 82 Montag says, ”Nobody listens anymore. I can’t talk to the walls because they are yelling at me. I can’t talk to my wife; she listens to the walls.” This shows how nobody these days are in tuned to their inner self and everyone is to dependent on TV and will believe anything the TV tells you. Only some people who have good moral values really realize how corrupt our society is.
The Tempest In The Tempest when Prospero forgives everyone in the end and sets them all free in spite of the wrongdoing they have done, it is a mockery of the United States unwillingness to forgive foreign countries and even its own people.
