  10. Great Lakes Drainage Basin • Largest system of fresh water on earth • Only the polar ice caps contain more fresh water • 10% of the American and 31% of the Canadian population live in the basin

Great Lakes Ice Cover 2014 • 1/3 ice covered in April 2014 • The largest ice cover ever observed in the satellite era – since the early 1970s • Record ice cover, abnormally low water temperatures and abundant snow cover impact national weather • Production of cool, dry air keeps severe weather at bay • creating a large-scale weather pattern that is keeping seasonal storms well below normal • Great Lakes are an astounding, ongoing weather phenomenon
