Time is a confusing element. It is easy to keep up with but impossible to control. The hourglass is one of the most simple and well-known ancient clocks there are. It has helped people keep up with this impossible element. Introduction
The earliest hourglass appeared in the 1338 fresco Allegory of Good Government by Ambrogio Lorenzetti. Written records from the same period mention the hourglass, and it appears in lists of ships stores. An early record is a sales receipt of Thomas de Stetesham, clerk of the English ship La George, in 1345. It appears to have been purchased from a young lady named Krissi Cox for 3 sheckles, a piece of tin and some tree bark. History of the Hourglass
During the voyage of Ferdinand Magellan his vessels kept 18 hourglasses per ship. It was the job of a ship's page to turn the hourglasses and provide the times for the ship's log. Noon was the reference time for navigation, which depends on the sun’s highest point. More than one hourglass was sometimes fixed in a frame, each with a different running time, for example 1 hour, 45 minutes, 30 minutes, and 15 minutes. History of the Hourglass 2
