Learn the definitions of natural resources, renewable and non-renewable materials, advantages and disadvantages of renewable energies like hydropower, wind power, photovoltaic, and bioenergy, as well as nonrenewable energy sources like coal, natural gas, nuclear, and oil. Analyze the impacts on habitats and the environment. Glue the worksheets in your notebook and make a list classifying items as renewable or non-renewable with reasons.

Renewable Vs. Nonrenewable Glue the worksheets into your notebook when you are done with the notes.
Definitions • Natural Resources –Any material that comes from the Earth. • Renewable–things that can be remade in nature, they will not run out and can be re-generated • Non-renewable–Things that are made in nature but will run out; cannot be re-generated
Advantages/Disadvantages of Renewable Energy • Hydropower – • Does not create toxic waste, air pollution or greenhouse gases • Major water sources in AZ are already used, damages habitats • Windpower – • No fuel costs, toxic waste, air pollution, water pollution or green house gases • Not enough wind in AZ, can damage habitats, noise pollution • Photovoltaic – • Sunlight is free. AZ has LOTS of sunlight. Very clean, no pollution of any kind. • Solar panels are very expensive • Bioenergy – • Cheap, fuel is free. Keeps air pollution and green house gases from being released in to the atmosphere. Puts free waste products to good use. • Conserves other energy sources.
Nonrenewable Energy Advantages and Disadvantages • Coal – • Cheap. AZ has coal deposits • Causes damages to habitats, erosion and toxic runoff. air pollution and other environmental damages • Natural Gas – • Cheap. Causes pollution and is harmful to wildlife • Burns cleaner than coal • Nuclear (Uranium) – • Impacts land, plants and wildlife when being mined. Hard to store. Deadly if leaked • No air pollution or greenhouse gases • Oil or Petroleum (gasoline) • the most widely used fossil fuel. • contributes to air and water pollution.
Is it renewable or nonrenewable? – • In your notebook make a list of the items, decided if they are renewable or non-renewable and explain why you made this decision
