The Steward of Gondor is a coward. He is afraid that his legacy will not be left in good condition if he stays alive while Aragorn is king. He decides to steer clear and far away from the whirlpool, because he is afraid of what might happen after he enters the whirlpool. He would rather take death over going into the unknown. The steward is to scared to take the chance of a possible abyss on the other side of the whirlpool, but he is familiar with the security of what he has.
