FCC Workshop on Public Switched Telephone Network in Transition December 6, 2011
Who We Are • Leading trade association in support of information and communications technology (ICT) • Approx. 500 member companies • TIA Members Goals • Drive broadband deployment and adoption • Facilitate spread of ICT • Backbone of broadband industry • Supply products and services used in provision of broadband and broadband-enabled applications
TECHNOLOGY OF RETAIL SWITCHED ACCESS LINES perFCC Local Competition Report: Status as of December 31, 2009 released 1/2011
HD - Voice • Advantages: • Clearer overall sound quality • Easier to recognize voices • Ease of deciphering words that have similar sounds. • Ability to hear faint talkers and to understand double-talk • Reduced listening effort, increased productivity and lessened listener fatigue • Easier comprehension, overcomes speakerphone or background noise • Comparison to HD-TV? Possible driver for all-IP adoption
VoIP & TTY • TTY implementation can present challenges, especially from “hybrid” networks • Packet loss need not be a problem in properly engineered and implemented IP networks • All IP-Network Could accommodate enhanced accessibility functionality
Burglar Alarms • Key Standard: Security Industry Association (SIA) –ANSI/SI • Has relied on the PSTN, but VoIP is driving the adoption of broadband signaling for alarm reporting. • Most IP Alarm transmission protocols have been proprietary.. • In 2007, US alarm manufacturers developed an open standard called DC-09. • This standard has been accepted as an American National Standard, and is published as ANSI/SIA DC-09-2007. [ref: ANSI/SIA DC-09-2007]
Fire Alarms • National Fire Protection Association’s Standard: “National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code” • Standard revised in 2010 with NFPA 72-2010 allows for “Managed Facilities-based Voice Network (MFVN)” to be used along with the PSTN • Previously the PSTN was the only wired service to communicate with a central station
