Indefinite Pronouns 6-8 P. 297
You have learned that pronouns take the place of nouns. The nouns that they replace are called antecedents. However, pronouns called indefinite pronouns do not have definite antecedents. An indefinite pronoun does not refer to a specific person, place, or thing.
Someone left a book on the desk. • Does anybody need a pencil?
Some indefinite pronouns are singular and always take a singular verb. Other indefinite pronouns are plural and always take a plural verb. • Everybody is waiting for the teacher. • Many are excited about the lesson.
What is the indefinite pronoun in each sentence? Is it singular or plural? • 1. Nobody is talking during the test. • 2. Several have finished the test. • 3. Others are still working. • 4. Each of us needs help. • 5. All of the students are hoping for a good grade. • 6. Someone suddenly remembers an answer. • 7. Does everyone know the first answer?
Write each indefinite pronoun. Then write the verb in parentheses that correctly completes each sentence. • 8. All of us (is, are) learning about folk dancing. • 9. Many of the dances (takes, take) practice. • 10. Nobody (learns, learn) the dances quickly. • 11. Few of the students (has, have) ever danced the Irish jig or the Highland fling. • 12. Everybody (is, are) clapping to the music. • 13. (Has, Have) anyone done these dances before. • 14. Each (requires, require) a lot of energy. • 15. Some (is, are) really exhausting but fun anyway. • 16. Several of the dancers (has, have) stopped for a rest.
