Agricultural to Industrial Revolution • Began in Great Britain • It was preceded by the Agricultural Revolution • AR increased production and decreased the demand for human labor • Increase in agricultural productivity and vast improvements in farm technology caused the decrease in human labor. The sickle and plow were a few tools to be improved upon
Inventions & Technology • Each invention or innovation introduced seemed to stimulate the development of others • Replacement of waterpower by steam power was the basic to the Industrial Revolution • Improved steel making methods also added to the rise of the IR • Industrial developments lead to improvements in transportation and communication
Factory System • IR made large scale production possible • Factory system brought together large numbers of people • They performed simple repetitive tasks for wages • Men, women, and children worked long hours for little pay
Large Corporations • Mass production and the assembly line fostered the growth of corporations Economic and Political Theories • Adam Smith & David Ricardo said gov. should not interfere with the operation of business • Humanitarian reformers such as John Stuart Mill said gov. should intervene to improve social conditions • Karl Marx predicted the overthrow of capitalism • Marx also advocated for the proletarian revolution
Workers • Begin to protest unemployment • Protest low wages • Protest poor working conditions • Gov. responds by passing laws to reform working conditions
Rate of Change • The rate of change in transportation and communication was very quick during the Industrial revolution • List five areas of modern tech that are undergoing rapid change Computers, robotics, electronic communication, cars, airplanes, space travel • What was the level of tech 10 yrs ago, at present and 10 yrs in the future • For example 10 yrs ago people required more training to use a computer Today “user-friendly” PCs almost work themselves • 10 yrs from now were will tech. be ?
