The Cell Cycle During interphase, a cell prepares for mitosis. Interphase is made up of: G1: During Gap 1, the cell grows. S: During Synthesis, the cell makes a copy of its DNA G2: During Gap 2, the cell grows some more.
Mitosis – The cell divides into 2 There are 4 stages of mitosis: • Prophase • Metaphase • Anaphase • Telophase • …And then Cytokinesis • begins
1st Stage of mitosis: PROPHASE • Centrioles move to opposite sides of the cell • Spindle fibers form • Nuclear membrane begins to break down • Chromosomes condense Centrioles Nuclear membrane Spindle fibers

2nd Stage of mitosis: Metaphase Spindle fibers attach to chromosomes and line them up in the Middle of the cell
Metaphase Plant Cell Animal Cell Photographs from: http://www.bioweb.uncc.edu/biol1110/Stages.htm
3rd Stage of mitosis: ANAPHASE • Chromatids(or pairs of chromosomes) are pulled Apart and move Away from each other
Anaphase Plant Cell Animal Cell Photographs from: http://www.bioweb.uncc.edu/biol1110/Stages.htm
4th Stage of mitosis: TELOPHASE • Two new nuclei form. • Mitosis ends. Nuclei Nuclei
Telophase Plant Cell Animal Cell Photographs from: http://www.bioweb.uncc.edu/biol1110/Stages.htm
And finally, CYTOKINESIS!! (This is technically not part of mitosis, but happens after mitosis ends) • Cytoplasm splits
IPMAT REMEMBER! • Interphase • Prophase • Metaphase • Anaphase • Telophase IPee on the MAT
