People • George Meade – Union general who commanded the Battle of Gettysburg • Abraham Lincoln – Union President, issued Emancipation Proclamation & Proclamation of Amnesty and Reconstruction • Nathan Bedford Forrest – extreme racist, “Grand Wizard” and creator of the KKK • Ulysses S. Grant – final commander of the Union. Had no political experience, but was elected President after A. Johnson’s impeachment
Battles • Fort Sumter – Civil War began with Confed attack on Fort Sumter. North knew that loss of control would signal Lincoln would not protect federal property in seceded states • Battle of Antietam – Confederate loss; cost the South any hope for support from a European country. After Antietam, McClellan was replaced by Abrose Burnside • George McClellan – disappointed Lincoln during Antietam because he seemed too reluctant to attack the Confederate Armies
Battle of Shiloh – Union victory; only early Union battle commanded by Grant. Albert Johnston led Confed. and both sides suffered great losses • Soldier Life – Many northern men lost their former jobs while they were off at battle. Most soldiers who died did so by being shot or from battle wounds. (disease less of a concern than in past years)
Federal Acts • Civil Rights Act 1866 – first Civil Rights Act in U.S. History. Attempted to curb “black codes” (unsuccessful) • Reconstruction Acts of 1867– Split former Confederacy into 5 military districts, required states to ratify 14th Amdmt, Stated Af-Ams could vote and serve as state delegates
