  2. Aims: • To find out what you need to do for the NAT 4 AVU and the NAT 5 ASSIGNMENT. • To start to think of ideas that you could use for your fieldwork for your AVU and ASSIGNMENT.

  3. What is the NAT 4 AVU? • The NAT 4 ADDED VALUE UNIT is a piece of work that is carried out by each pupil who is going to complete the NAT 4 course. • It is handed in at the end of the course along with the NAT 4 unit assessments and it is required to complete the NAT 4 course. • It is based on fieldwork that is carried out by each pupil.

  4. What is the NAT 5 ASSIGNMENT? • The NAT 5 ASSIGNMENT is a written assessment that is completed under exam conditions in class time. • It counts for 25% of your overall NAT 5 mark so it is VERY IMPORTANT. • It is based on fieldwork that is carried out by pupils.

So what do you need to know? • All pupils are going to complete both the NAT 4 AVU and the NAT 5 ASSIGNMENT. • This means that all pupils will have the NAT 4 AVU in place if they need it and they will complete it well in advance so they don’t have to rush later in the year. • Because both the AVU and ASSIGNMENT are based on fieldwork you will use the same topic and data in both – this means that you don’t need to do twice the fieldwork.

  6. So what do you need to know? • By completing both tasks it will mean you have a much better understanding of the data and therefore your ASSIGNMENT will be easier to complete and hopefully this will mean a better mark too.

  7. Timeline – how will we complete each task. Now – start thinking about potential topics that you could look at for your fieldwork. Before summer – start fieldwork and gather all of the data needed. TBC – Complete the AVU (details on how this will be done will be given closer to the time) TBC – Review your data and question in preparation for the NAT 5 ASSINMENT TBC – Complete the NAT 5 ASSIGNMENT.

  8. Choosing your area of fieldwork study • This is the most important part of your AVU/ASSIGNMENT. • You must pick a topic of study that you can gather a lot of data on but also a topic that is not too difficult. • You can choose anything as long as it is Geographic. Try to think of things that you have studied in class and also things that you done at the start of S3 during the skills unit.

  9. Task: • Try and think of different ideas for Geographic field studies. • It is important that you have a research questions – something that can be answered. • The practice ASSIGNMENT that we covered in class was a weather study so that is one example that you could think of.

  11. How traffic noise and volume changes along Crow Road. Examples. How does the environmental quality of Jordanhill compare with Anniesland? What changes have happened to the Inner City of Glasgow in the past 20 years? What evidence is there of coastal erosion in XXXXX area? What measure have been taken to reduce traffic problems in Glasgow?

  12. Examples. • As you can see the topics can be very varied – you can look at Human or Physical Geography.

  13. IMPORTANT. • When Gathering and Processing your information you must: • Collect information from at least two sources, including the use of fieldwork where possible and/or maps. These could be from primary sources or from secondary sources. You should keep a note of all the sources that you have used.

  14. Sources • Primary Sources (collected yourself) • Letters • Questionnaires/interview • Emails • Field sketches, photographs • Measurements – weather, river flow, soil sampling, land use mapping, traffic counts

  16. Processing the information • It is also important that you process the information that you gather in a number of different ways. You should use a range of graphs, charts, photographs, maps – anything that you can add will show a good understanding of the topic and of your Geographic knowledge.

  17. Next steps - 1 • You must decide on a topic of study. • You have been given a worksheet that has to be completed as homework for XXXXXX. • This sheet must be signed by a parent or guardian as well as your teacher to confirm the topic of study.

  19. Next steps - 3 • The NAT 4 AVU • Now that you have completed your fieldwork and research we are going to complete the NAT 4 AVU. • This process will mean that you have a greater understanding of the data that you have gathered.

  20. The NAT 4 AVU • To complete the NAT 4 AVU you are going to process all of the data that you have gathered and display it on a poster. • This is similar to the group task that you completed during the S3 skills unit.

The NAT 4 AVU • Success criteria: • Your poster should include: • The title of your study. • Processed data showing a range of different graphs, maps and diagrams. • Information on how you gathered the information (at least two sources of the data) • Pictures with annotations if appropriate. • Information about what you found out. • Conclusions that you can draw from your study.

  22. The NAT 4 AVU • Now your poster is complete we are going to have a viewing gallery where each poster will be displayed and you must be able to stand and talk about your study and what you found out.

  23. Next steps - 4 • The NAT 5 ASSINMENT – two pages of data. • The last task was to complete a poster about your study. Now you must condense this information down to just two A4 pages for the final assignment.

The NAT 5 ASSINMENT – two pages of data. • The two pages of data should be made up of graphs, charts, maps, diagrams, pictures (with annotations) and other processed information. • It should not include any chucks of text. The reason for this is that when it comes to your final written assignment you can’t copy text straight from the two pages of data.

  25. The NAT 5 ASSINMENT – two pages of data. • The two pages of data should be of a high quality and they will be sent off with your written assessment. • They will not be marked but it is important that the assessor can look at them to confirm your findings.

The NAT 5 ASSINMENT – two pages of data. • Write name at the top. • You must include the research question. • There should be a range of different graphs used so that you can refer to them in the write-up. • Any maps, photographs, photocopied material must be annotated to make it ‘your own’. • Most, if not all two pages should include a map to show locations or information relating to the fieldwork. • Keep your processed data relatively small so that you can include more on the two pages. • All graphs, photos, maps, diagrams MUST be labelled i.e. Map 1, Diagram 2 so that you can refer to them in the write-up. • Avoid too much writing as you cannot copy this in the write-up. Notes or prompts are better.
