In a democracy power is in the hand of the people A direct democracy exists where the will of the people is translated into law directly by the people themselves. In an indirect democracy, a small group of persons, chosen by the people to act as their representatives, expresses the popular will. Democracy: Who can participate? Characteristics of a Democracy • 2 major forms: Parliamentary and Presidential
Presidential Democracy • President (Executive Branch) is separate from the Legislative Branch • Both branches have separate powers to check one other and are equal in power • Both are elected separately • Invented and used by the USA
Parliamentary Democracy • Executive is made up of the prime minister and the cabinent. • The prime minister AND his cabinet are all members of Parliament (Legislative Branch) • Leading political party in Parliament choose the Prime Minister and cabinet to lead the country • THEREFORE: The Executive Branch is chosen and controlled by the legislative branch
