History It is the worlds most extensive stretch of coral reef The first signs of The Great Barrier Reef appeared about 500,0000 years ago It is believed that the first sighting of The Great Barrier Reef was around the year 1522 by a Portuguese expedition led by Christovao de Mendonca Now The Great Barrier Reef draws more then one million visitors a year Due to so many tourists it generates more than 6 billion dollars of revenue per year

Interesting Facts Contains a enormous amount of species including 1,500 types of fish, 360 species of hard coral, 5,000 species of mollusc, and more It is composed of more than 2,900 individual reefs It covers an overall area that is bigger than the size of Italy About 10% of the worlds fish species can be found in the Great Barrier Reef It can be seen from outer space
