  4. The Chain System Academic writing requires that we use evidence while we write. Generally this is textual evidence. Picking strong textual evidence can be found using the Chain System.

  6. 1. Read • Read closely. • We know we are looking at the characters. • Pay attention to: • What they say • What they do • How they interact with others • How others react to them

  7. 2. Notes • As you read take NOTES • Write down quotes that: • Seem interesting • Provided insight into a character or plot • Seem to change the course of the plot • Respond to the quote so you remember why you wrote it down. • Respond in another color so it is easy to find.

  8. 3. Think • When you have FINISHED reading and noting • Think about all the information you have. • What does it say about _________.

  9. 4. Opinion • Based on the thinking you do create an opinion. • This opinion is what you are going to prove with evidence.

  10. 5. Select Quotes to Use • Once you have an opinion • Go back to the quotes you wrote down, which ones will help show that your opinion is correct.
