IV Therapy

1. IV Therapy Administering fluids and different electrolytes in the circulatory system of the client by using the veins is the basic concept of Intravenous Therapy (IV). In doing so, a catheter is placed on a vein, which in turn helps the fluid to move in to the patient’s body. IV therapies are of 3 types which are; Push IV piggy bank and Blood transfusion. Push therapy is used mostly in the emergencies where the nurses have to introduce the pain medication in the IV. Then there is secondary additive type of IV therapy and that is IV piggy bank in which drug dilution is used so that the drug is used in the current IV tube and later on it is given very slowly to the client. The third type of IV therapy is the blood transfusion and is used when blood gets donated to a client directly so that the lost blood is replaced. As soon as the factors of IV therapy are determined and the type of therapy that needs to be used, the professional responsible for the therapy has to follow the rules and regulations in order to administer the therapy efficiently and effectively. The team of professionals needs to be focused and attentive while governing the IV therapy so that the result is positive at the end of the therapy. It is very important for a professional to choose a site to start the process of IV. The professional should be able to select a position such that the vein is soft, visible, straight, and palpable and has a blood flow that is good. The idea is to choose a position so that the damage to that particular site is averted. Certain factors are necessary to consider when choosing a position for IV therapy: 1. Length of the therapy: the time span for the therapy will suggest the type of catheter to be used.

For example, if blood transfusion has to be done then a large catheter will be needed. 3. Hand dominance: It is very necessary to satisfy the patient’s comfort level and to be able to do that, there is strong need to choose the hand which is used more and one is able to make the therapy successful. 4. Patient’s vein: Most of the times there are patients whose veins are damaged due the use of IV therapy. This will make it difficult for the professional to choose the location of the catheter to be placed. An example for such type of patients is the geriatric patients whose veins are very delicate and to make the IV therapy possible in such cases there is a need to choose a small catheter.
