  3. TOURISM PLANNING AT NATIONAL LEVEL • Tourism policy • Marketing strategies • Taxation structures • Investments policies • Legislation • Infrastructure development • Transport systems & organizations • Education, training and manpower programs

TOURISM PLANNING AT REGIONAL LEVEL • Sets of activities that deals with the development of tourism at regional level • It tends to be much more detailed & specific • Not possible to consider regional development as an isolated and independent issue • It must be considered in the scope with national development goals

TOURISM PLANNING AT LOCAL LEVEL • Tourism planning at local level adopts diverse forms • Forms related to organization of tourism resources, physical development and visitor management • However, recently local planning authorities have increasingly started to include concerns over social and environmental impacts of tourism in their local programs.

  6. TOURISM PLANNING AT LOCAL LEVEL • Tourism planning at local level is extremely important. Why? • Planning at the local level is important if regions wish to deliver tourism experiences, which ensure satisfaction of both visitors and hosts.

  7. THE LIFE ENVIRONMENT PROJECT • LIFE: financial instrument for the environment • introduced in 1992 • spearhead of EU’s environmental policy • 3 areas: • LIFE Nature • LIFE Environment • LIFE Third Countries

  8. THE LIFE ENVIRONMENT PROJECT • Strategies and tools for sustainable tourism in the coastal areas of the Mediterranean • The Rimini Riviera (Italy) and Calvia (Spain) • biggest tourist catchment areas in Europe • 200.000 hotel beds & 40.000.000 presences a.y.

  9. SUSTAINABLE TOURISM • Combining economic aspects, social coherence, repect for the environment, tourist satisfaction. • Province of Rimini & Municipality of Calvia • + hoteliers association • + research institute • implement the LIFE environment project

OBJECTIVES • Making tourism a modern business capable of guaranteeing economic development while respecting the environment and capable of looking ahead. • Rimini: 2.700.000 arr., 2.500 hotels, 136.000 beds • Calvia: 1.700.000 arr., 170 hotels, 60.000 beds • continu to bring millions of persons together: sun, sea and amusement

  11. THE AIMS • Deseasonalise the offer • upgrading urban development • environmental quality certification systems • support actions by Tour Operators in environmental field • enhance cultural identities and roots

PARTICIPATION & ACTIONS • General participation: public bodies, private operators, associations, citizens, tourists • Actions: • Integrated coastal management plan • improvement of the environmental performance of T.O. • consciousness raising of tourists and T.O. • Local participation • Network • Publishing results of international conferences
