Mrs. Deniz • I was born in Turkey and have been living here in the United States for more than a decade. • I am married and mother of two sweet daughters, Sarah and Safiya. • This is my second year with Coral Academy of Science and eighth year in teaching.  •  I have my Masters degree in Elementary Education emphasizing Gifted Education from Arizona State University. • I am coaching the (A STEM) club.

  4. Miss Evans -Originally from Sparks, NV -Attended UNLV for Bachelor’s Degree -Currently attending ACE for Master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction with a focus on literacy -3rd year at CASLV

Common Core State Standards The Common Core State Standards provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn, so teachers and parents know what they need to do to help them. The standards are designed to be robust and relevant to the real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills that our young people need for success in college and careers.   6. Math Curriculum • Saxon math • Daily math class schedule • Homework “ixl.com” once a week. No homework on Thursday Learn Zillion.com • Test and Assessments Cumulative tests (each 5 lessons ) Benchmarks (each set of 20 lessons) End-of-Course-Exam (end of the year)

  7. Math Curriculum ONLINE MATH PROGRAM*IXL.COM* IXL features comprehensive coverage of math curriculum from pre-K to algebra, students receive unlimited access to all grade levels. Whether they need a challenge or just a quick review, students will always have access to skills that meet their needs. Also, question-specific explanations offer immediate feedback and valuable instruction for all.

  8. Science Curriculum HOUGHTON-MIFFLIN SCIENCE PROGRAM The three main areas of science that will be covered are Life Science, Earth Science and Physical Science. Nevada standards for third grade science include the study of Scientific Method, and the History of science. • Plants and animals, the solar system, how the earth is formed, and energy, force and motion. DAILY SCIENCE CLASS SCHEDULE • Scientist’s Journal Hands-on activities, Projects, Web quest, • Test or Quiz • Science Fair

  9. Reading Curriculum • Storytown: Grade 4 Text • Tests on Fridays • Weekly written response • Interactive reading notebooks: will be graded • Reading Logs: 20 mins every night at least • Due on MONDAYS • “Book Clubs”-flexible ability grouping • Assignments must be followed exactly

  10. Writing Curriculum • Students will participate in writer’s workshop • Expected to keep an active writer’s notebook • Note-taking • Quarterly goal setting • Graphic organizers • “Writing Process”

  11. Social Studies • Coral Academy uses the Communities textbook and curriculum • Focus on relationships, current events, and community awareness • Integrate with core subjects as much as possible • Expect additional research or projects to be completed at home

Grading Policy • Grades will be based on a “points-earned” system • All weekly tests will be worth 100 points • Benchmark , end-of-course, and other exams may be worth more • Coral uses the PowerSchool online grade book • If you are returning to the school this year, username and password are the same • If you are new to the Coral family, a username and password will be sent to you with the progress reports on September 14th

  14. Token system • Teaches economy • Five tokens each week • Will be paid for classroom jobs • Students may need to pay for their choices • Can always earn extra BONUS tokens! • Can purchase “game day, rent a seat, teacher provided lunch, homework pass, and more…..” during quarterly shopping days

  15. Classroom Expectations • One rule: • “You are free to engage in any activity that does not cause a problem for you or anyone else.”

  16. If a student chooses to break the class rule, there will be consequences…these apply to one classroom period at a time. • First time: Verbal Warning • Second Time: Lose one token • Third time: Lose two tokens (Lose 5 minutes of recess) • Fourth time:  Lose recess • Fifth Time: Note home/office referral if necessary
