Math • Everyday Math Curriculum • Beginning goals: just being introduced • Developing goals: students have seen the skill before, and will continue to work with the skill • Secure goal: Have practiced working with the skill and should have complete mastery • Homework: • Study Links will be sent home several times a week • Practicing basic facts: flashcards, oral quizzing, internet game sites (check our delicious account) • Should be about 20 minutes per night

Reading • Houghton-Mifflin Curriculum • Whole class lessons, review of reading strategies • Vocabulary Work • Word Work • Grammar • Spelling • Guided Reading: Flexible grouping, can change weekly depending on needs and skills of children in the group • Homework: • At least 30 minutes of reading every night. (Does not have to be a novel.) • Practice book pages

  4. Social Studies • History • Early European Explorers • North American Colonization • Revolutionary Era and a new way of governing • Constitution

  5. Science • Scientific Method • Electricity and Magnetism • Astronomy • Stars, constellations, galaxies • Human Body Systems • Circulatory • Digestive • Respiratory • Excretory • Nervous • Integumentary (Skin) • Reproductive (New Me Class)

  6. New Technology! • 30 “Triple E’s” one-to-one laptops • Word processing • Spreadsheets • Wireless internet and web cams • Will be used daily in each room • Wiki Pages and Blogs for each classroom • If no internet access at home, let your child’s teacher know

Wiki Page • Parent participation is important • Leave comments for your child and others • Positive comments or questions for the student • Authentic audience • Transparency • Everything done on the wiki is emailed directly to the teacher • Date/time and name stamp attached to all changes • History keeps track of everything ever done on each page – can revert to older versions if something is lost

  8. Positive Behavior System • 3 B’s • Be Safe, Be Respectful, Be Responsible • Reward Positive Behavior • Teacher praise, earned privileges, end of month celebrations • High Expectations

Homework Policy • Study time expected every school night • About 60 minutes nightly • 30 minutes of reading, 15 minutes of writing, 10-15 minutes of math • Anything that is assigned fills in that time, doesn’t add to it • Weekends • We usually don’t assign homework over weekends • Fix and Finish work will be sent home • Things that didn’t get finished during the week • Agendas • We expect them to be used daily • Missing homework • Call home at lunch time • One more night to complete the homework, or it is a zero • Missed homework is not done during lunch/recess

Communication • Newsletters • Look for one to go home the first Tuesday of every month • On the class Blog • Blog and Wiki • Where to look for what is happening in the classroom • Your child’s work is stored there • Email/phone • Email is the easiest/quickest way to contact us • You can also leave a message on voicemail
