  2. Hazards Hazards - Something that has the potential to cause harm • Trailing wires are a hazard

  3. Risks Risk - The likelihood that the hazard will cause harm • A risk is that someone will trip over the trailing wire

  4. Responsibilities for remaining alert to hazards and risks • It is essential that all members of staff remain alert to any hazards/risks in the salon to prevent any accidents occurring • It is essential that all risks are reported immediately to senior management and where possible are rectified • Hazards such as water on the floor, blocked fire exits, faulty equipment and many more must be dealt with immediately to help prevent serious accidents in the workplace.

  5. Personal responsibilities for handling risks • Employees must deal with any hazard that they have had training in, they should also report these to senior management to prevent them occurring in the future • Any risks that an employee is unable to deal with should be reported immediately • Any hazards that pose an immediate risk to health and safety such as fire should be dealt with immediately, the emergency services must be called from a place of safety, usually the fire assembly point, and the building must not be re-entered until it is safe to do so

  6. The importance of adhering to health and safety policies and practices • Failure to adhere to health and safety policies can result in serious accidents occurring, all health and safety policies should be followed to ensure the workplace is safe for all visitors, clients and colleagues • Failure to adhere to health and safety can also result in instant dismissal.

  7. Where and when to get additional health and safety assistance • Additional health and safety advice can be obtained from a number of places including: • Emergency services (999) this can be used for emergencies including fire, floods, ambulances and terrorism alerts • Health and safety policy within the workplace will contain advice and support on matters regarding health and safety • Health and safety poster (this will contain the contact details of the local health and safety office)
