When you first get in… • Add LO and DQ to page 65 LO: • Analyze & Cite evidence from primary documents • Identify how women contributed to the Civil War DQ: • How did women contribute to the Civil War? Table of Contents Pg. 64 Acrostic Poem 10/22/13 Pg. 65 Women’s Role 10/22/13
Intro: Women During the Civil War • Back in 1860, women did not have many rights. Women could not vote, they could not own property, they could not hold the same jobs as men, they could not appear in court, and they could not be soldiers. Mainly, women were in charge of the house. They took care of the children– raised them and educated them, cleaned the house, prepared food, etc. When the Civil War breaks out, women’s roles start to change…..
1st Step: Historical Question • How did women contribute to the Civil War?
Pick Jobs • Facilitator: Decides on a plan to tackle task & makes sure everyone participates • Recorder: Everyone is recording • Tracker: Makes sure everyone understands directions & keeps group on track with time • Reporter: Will share conclusions with class
2nd Step: Research • There are 11 sources provided to you (most primary, some secondary) • You must use 8 of the 11 sources • Look through the documents and record evidence of different ways women contributed to the Civil War • Each piece of evidence must end will a citation (ex. Doc A or A)
3rd Step: Hypothesis or Claim • Now you and your group must look at the evidence & pick 3 ways that women contributed to the Civil War and complete the statement on your paper
5th & 6th Steps: Results and Conclusions • Evidence: • Document ___: describe • Document ___: describe • Document ___: describe • Reasoning: (Why did you choose that evidence?)
Example from Last Investigation • Claim -Our group thinks the North had the advantage in the Civil War. • Evidence (Just Facts) -Doc A shows the North had 80% of factories -Doc B shows the North had more horses than the South -Doc F shows the North had a trained General, Ulysses S. Grant • Reasoning (Explain why that fact supports your claim) -Document A supports our claim because if the North had more factories, they could produce more ammo and weapons for war. -Document B supports our claim because if the North had more horses, they could travel faster on the battlefield. -Document F supports our claim because if the North had a trained general, he can better command the troops on the battlefield.
