Plant$ for Profit$ • The purpose of this project is for students to : • learn how to start a business, • use science to measure environmental conditions, and • to have FUN !!!!!!!
Students will be deciding about : • Growing Native or Non-Native Plants • Performing a Survey to determine which plants to grow. • Using Organic or Traditional Growing Methods • Growing Food Crops or Ornamental Crops • Determining a Crop’s Market Value • Constructing a Marketing Plan • Assessing the ease of growing the Crop
Preparing to Plant the Crop • Students will interview farmers, research plant culture texts, and search the Internet to decide how to grow the plants they have chosen • Students will test the soil and determine what they need to do to prepare the ground for planting. • Students will set up a watering and maintenance schedule for their crop.
Planting the Crop • Students will come up with a list of materials they need for their plantings. • Teacher will assemble all necessary materials. • Students will prepare the soil for planting. • Students will plant crops. • Students will begin collecting data on their plantings.
Learning to Make Web Pages • Students will learn to make a web page. • Students will post planting data on the web page. • Students will make web page available to other students on and off campus and to community members • Students will compare results with other schools doing similar projects.
Data Collection and Record Keeping • Students will collect data on costs of materials and labor expended. • Students will make measurements on environmental conditions using scientific equipment. • Students will post all data on their web page. • Students will note reasons for any changes they make while growing their crops.
Marketing Plan$ • Students will prepare a marketing plan including : • How and where to sell the plants’ • How to advertise the products using graphics and point of sale materials generated by using computers. • Students will assess the effectiveness of their planting and marketing plans
Harvesting your Plants • Students will harvest plants and begin selling them, following their marketing plan. • Students will keep records on selling costs and revenues from sales. • Students will prepare a profit and loss statement. • Students will post profit and loss statement on their web page.
Final Report • Students will prepare a four part report including : • Plant cultivation results • Data tables and • Financial spreadsheets • Evaluation of success of Plants for Profit$ • Students will decide how to spend the Profits from their project
